El Segundo Blue Butterfly
As part of the blackwork anthology publishing venture, I wanted to include several more examples of kinds of blackwork. I used a couple things I had stitched previously (put that I want to redo later), and stitched another three items. I started the fern at An Tir 12th night, during the Very Long Court, stitching the silver Vandyke stitch that outlines it all. Then I finished it at Winter Weekend, and added the background of black stitches there, as well.

Then I designed, laid out, and started stitching the broom pods at Winter Weekend, as well. Finally, I designed, but did not stitch, the Flower at WW. I stitched it later, after getting home.

The fern (or whatever it is) is based on a nightcap in the collection of the Manchester Gallery of Costume at Platt Hall. The broom pods are from the Nottingham Costume Museum, part of the Lord Middleton collection. The flower is from a painting I saw in Minneapolis, of an Unknown Lady ca. 1545 (possibly Cecily Bodenham, d. 1543).
The pictures are below the cut.
